Flower Care Tips - Blossom Tree Florist

How to Keep Your Flowers Fresh for Longer

Fresh flowers have the power to brighten a space, uplift your mood, and bring warmth into any occasion. Whether you have received a surprise delivery, chosen a bouquet from a florist in Braybrook, or decided to send flowers online to someone special, it’s natural to want those blooms to last as long as possible. At Blossom Tree Florist, we offer a wide range of flowers for every occasion, including anniversary flowers, sympathy flowers, get well soon flowers, birthday flowers, flowers for Mother's Day, Valentine's Day flowers, new baby flowers and more.

Start with a Clean Vase

A clean vase makes a big difference to the longevity of your arrangement. Bacteria can build up on glass or ceramic surfaces and shorten the life of your flowers. Before placing your blooms inside, wash the vase thoroughly with warm, soapy water and rinse it well. Even the smallest trace of residue can affect how fresh the flowers remain.

Trim the Stems at an Angle

Cutting stems on a slant allows them to absorb water more efficiently. Use sharp scissors or secateurs and trim about two centimetres off the ends before placing the flowers into the vase. This step should be repeated every few days to keep the water uptake consistent. Avoid using blunt scissors as they can crush the stems and reduce water absorption.

Use Fresh Water Daily

Flowers thrive when their water is clean and free from bacteria. Replace the water in the vase every day if possible, or at least every second day. Each time you change the water, give the vase a quick rinse and remove any leaves that might sit below the waterline. Leaves in water decay quickly and can create bacteria that shortens the life of your blooms.

Add a Flower Food Solution

Most bouquets come with a small sachet of flower food. Mixing this with fresh water helps nourish your flowers and prevent bacteria growth. If you don’t have flower food on hand, you can create a simple homemade solution by adding a teaspoon of sugar and a splash of lemon juice to the vase water. This mixture gives your flowers a little extra energy to stay vibrant.

Keep Them Away from Heat and Direct Sunlight

Flowers last longer in cool conditions. Avoid placing your arrangement near heaters, radiators, or direct sunlight. These conditions cause flowers to dehydrate quickly and wilt before their time. A spot with indirect light and good air circulation is best.

Remove Wilting Flowers Promptly

As flowers begin to age, they release gases that can affect the fresher blooms in the same arrangement. To prolong the beauty of the bouquet, remove any wilting stems straight away. This allows the remaining flowers to thrive for longer without interference.

Mind the Placement Around Fruit

Fruit releases natural gases as it ripens, which can shorten the lifespan of fresh flowers. Keep your vase away from the fruit bowl to avoid early wilting. A little distance goes a long way in keeping your arrangement fresher.

With these simple care tips, your bouquet can remain vibrant for longer, allowing you to enjoy its fragrance and beauty well past the first few days.
